Traceability of Surface Longwave Irradiance Measurements to SI Using the IRIS Radiometers

EasyChair Preprint no. 9404

4 pagesDate: December 3, 2022

Abstract

The World Radiation Center at PMOD/WRC is operated on behalf of the WMO and provides traceability of shortwave and longwave radiation to the World Standard Group (WSG) and World Infrared Standard Group (WISG) respectively. As has been discussed previously [1,2], both the WSG and the WISG show slight deviations from the SI which need to be accounted for in a future redefinition of these references. The process has been initiated by the WMO, which has created a Task Team on Radiation References to review the status of the WSG and WISG and to propose activities aimed at resolving these issues. Specifically, the uncertainty of atmospheric longwave radiation measurements was investigated in a campaign at the Southern Great Plains (SGP) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) site, Oklahoma, USA which lasted from September to December 2017. The campaign was held in two phases of 2 weeks each to sample different atmospheric conditions. Figure 1 shows an overview of the measurements from the participating instruments.

Keyphrases: longwave irradiance, radiation budget, traceability to SI
