Robotics Cyber Security Issues

EasyChair Preprint no. 9792

12 pagesDate: February 28, 2023

Robotics are becoming more ubiquitous, and this teleology existence almost for a century also keeps continuously evolving with better capabilities and advancements in an environment including hardware and software. Nowadays, Robotics are in different shapes with different abilities. In this case, a robot can be simple and small but able to increase performance and productivity. Moreover, this technology has become an integral part of human lives, and Robotics automation usage cases increased from space projects, defence, and education, or expanded from household utilities to medical. When it comes to Robotics functionalities which is similar to computer systems running by a program that is defined to repeat task or operation. In addition, they are suffering from security issues identical to computer systems that faced for decades. Therefore, when robots are compromised, which directly impacts two different areas: I. Physical elements that may arise concern three key aspects; integrity, confidentiality, and availability of the robot system operational and functional also, it can lead to attacks or hacks. I. Virtual security and vulnerabilities can be in the provider platforms, misconfigurations, weakness inside of robot system (by design) and risks from data communications channels. For example, the WIFI connection is designed with a poor encryption system. Therefore, both physical and virtual problems in robotics systems are part of Cybersecurity in Robotics which is rapidly growing. In this case, the paper focuses on cybersecurity in Robotics and identifies security gaps, vulnerabilities and risks.

Keyphrases: Cybersecurity, IDS/IPS, Robotics
