Abstract

This study examines the effect of ESG performance on bank efficiency and whether this relationship is moderated by CEO returnee. Based on sample of 100 banks from MENA Countriesobserved from 2010 to 2022, the results indicate that ESG performance ESG has a significant negative impact on banking efficiency. These findings suggest that ESG decreases bank efficiency. Furthermore, we analyzed the moderating effect of CEO returnees on the relationship between ESG and bank efficiency. The results show that CEOs with foreign experience and education positively moderate this relationship, thereby contributing to the improvement of bank efficiency.
