Drawing on the benefits theory of nonprofit finance, this paper examines longitudinal patterns in the income profiles of a representative sample of registered charities in England and Wales. We find evidence of a declining reliance on government funding over the 10-year study period (2006-2016). We also show that a significant proportion of voluntary organisations play a multifaceted role alongside the state and market, providing a mix of collective and private benefits through their activities. Keyphrases: Donations, charity finance, revenue streams
